How to fix iTunes broken by AVG ( trojan horse or virus detection )
July 24th, 2009
AVG has been identifying a virus or trojan horse in iTunes and it either deletes some files or puts them into quarantine and iTunes will stop working. To fix this issue, you have to follow those steps:
- Uninstall AVG.
- Download and install Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.
- Uninstall iTunes and its components in the following order: Apple Mobile Device Support, Apple Software Update, Bonjour, QuickTime, iTunes.
- Delete all other software developed by Apple.
- Disable your antivirus and firewall.
- Download and install iTunes.
Now iTunes should work without any problem. Please let us know if you have any problems.

I just fixed this problem this morning. Go to the Virus vault in AVG and find the itunes files and then restore them. Two of the files did not want to restore, so I chose Restore As and saved them to my desktop. I then closed, not minimized, AVG and started itunes. It automatically went thru the install and everything works fine.
I followed the directions above. I got to the step where it was time to uninstall ITunes (after all the other programs listed), but I received this message:
“A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file C:\WINDOWS\installer\ITunes.msi”
Then…
“Fatal error during installation”
Now what?
nevermind, found my error
