Palm Pre Getting WebOS Software Update To Fix Speed Issues

The Palm Pre was the most expected gadget of the year and it won numerous awards thanks to its innovative WebOS features. It’s a good smartphone with the hardware architecture similar to the iPhone 3GS, however, the sales didn’t go as high as expected. Although the Pre is a powerful handheld, WebOS is not exactly the fastest platform out there and it seems like Palm is going to address speed issues with the next update.

WebOS feels slow sometimes, particularly while accessing menus or apps, but it would be better to say that the UI can be faster. Many people said that this is happening due to the multitasking capability (an important feature that the iPhone doesn’t have), however, this feature works great. Recently at a WebOS event in London, Ben Galbraith and Dion Almae said that in WebOS “the path to the GPU didn’t exist” but this will be solved soon thanks to a bunch of CSS changes.

What do you think? Does the Palm Pre feel slow for you? How would you improve your phone?

They desperately need to support .ics which would allow the Pre to accept meeting invitations. It should also have the option to invite meeting participants in calendar entries initiated from the Pre.

My 2nd issue has to do with poor reception in comparison with other phone’s that I have had.

3rd issue relates to contacts. When restoring the Pre after a wipe I find that it links several contacts which should not be linked. This takes quite awhile to correct after restoring the Pre.

Pre is definitely sluggish. I’m on my third..and now once again having issues where the phone simply turns off by itself. I’m willing to go with my 4th pre..I do like the phone overall. I don’t have any reception issues that are abnormal.

  3. Larry says:

Yes I’ve had some speed issue too, not sure if it’s just my expectations based on experience with a lot of other computers and devices or something inherent with a 1st generation H/W, S/W, O/S combo.

Would like… no love to see Visual Voicemail come to the Pre. With so many useful text based communication channels coming into my handheld computer with telephone capability the laborious task listening to and deleting or transcribing voice mail messages has simply become something I don’t do any more. I’m on the verge of becoming the kind of snob that says “if you can’t send me a text, email, or Facebook we really don’t have anything to talk about.

It is quite sluggish. Particularly the phone part is terribly slow and close to unbearable. There is another bug where a person you are messaging with’s conversation disappears. The only way to fix is to partially reset the phone (wipe a lot of data). My GF and I have to do this every few weeks.

I really like the pre, but that is because I maybe make 5-10 phone calls per month. If I used the phone feature more, I would get rid of it.

Its very likely I will leave for a android device as they evolve further.
