SSD’s are the future of data storage. They are fast, they are reliable… did we mention that they are fast? The fact that SSD’s are really the next step in data storage is reflected by Google’s decision not to support hard drives for their next Google Chrome OS.

The problem so far was that SSD drives were not really designed to be used with desktops. The guys from OCZ are among the first to design and release an SSD drive especially for desktops. Called OCZ Colossus SSD Drives, this line of SSD drives really make that SATA 3GB/sec pipeline work for its money, with both read and write speeds that are close to the maximum theoretical speeds for SATA connections.

That high speed is reached by joining together 4 smaller SSDs into a single, larger SSD Drive. But, within certain limits, the drive’s size does not matter if you will use it on your desktop, will it? It’s not huge, but it’s not tiny either.

PC Perspective got their hands on an OCZ 256GB Colossus drive and the results they uncovered are proof of the high speed we talked about. Check out their results here.

The only downside is that the 1TB OCZ Colossus drive costs a bag of money and then some more: no less than $3300… auch!
