Gmail Down with Numeric Code 66, Just Another Outage which Causes Problems

Yesterday night on April 16, Gmail was down again. After the it went down a couple of months ago (maybe there were others but we didn’t notice them), we’ve got ourselves with another outage, and frankly, we are getting tired of them. Although the outage affected only some users, some said that “this is the end of the Internet”, but why would they say such thing? Well, because many people depend on Gmail, including me as I need it for my work and I’m sure there are a lot of people who find themselves in my situation.

“We’re aware of a problem with Google Mail affecting a small subset of users. The affected users are unable to access Google Mail,” said Google. The time was 2:16 p.m. PDT on Thursday.

Just like the Hotmail outage last week, this affected a lot of users and after a while Google said that “Gmail service has already been restored for some users, and we expect a resolution for all users within the next 1 hour.” However, the outage persisted, and it affected a lot of users. Users we’re getting a message that their Gmail service is temporary unavailable, but an extra message was displayed: “Hide Detailed Technical Info Numeric Code: 66″. I don’t know what’s that, maybe just a bad Gmail interface, but I remember that we had this problem with Gmail error 66 back in January and February.

I’m not experiencing Gmail problems now, and from what I noticed the #gmaildown and #gmailfail trends have disappeared from Twitter. Maybe Gmail is not down Today, and we will have a peaceful Friday. Stay tuned, I’ll keep you updated if anything changes.

Update: Users report Gmail is still down on Friday morning. Thanks Bill!

Comments

  • Gmail is still down for me this Friday morning.

  • GMAIL is still down this Friday morning for me also!

  • It’s interesting nobody points out (not just here, but in general) that hotmail has been down LESS than gmail over the past year, or the fact that hotmail, strictly when you’re talking about moving through the inbox and initial load-up time, is now faster, cleaner (using adblock in ff), and simpler than the bogged-down-with-cool-features (albeit still fast) gmail. Yet, when hotmail did actually go down a couple of weeks ago, all the comments / blogs were screaming “gmail, this is why i use gmail!”. And, just FYI, I love both gmail and hotmail.

  • Gmail still down…..

  • it’s not working for me and it’s 2:14pm on friday

  • I haven’t been able to access since about 6:30am this morning… I still can’t get in and it’s at 2:31pm CST on Friday.

  • I was using gmail without issue until about 5:30 EST on Friday. Now I can’t get in at all.

  • i could use it (albeit in html fashion only), but, now, i’m being told “it’s no longer available”

  • I can’t even make it to any of the mail.google.com or gmail.com
websites. I did a dig mail.google.com and dig gmail.com, and tried
their IPs, but could not access their sites. Other google sites are
    unaffected. My ISP is BellSouth.

  • April 27 my gmail has been down for two days

  • April 27, and my gmail has been down for two days as well. This sucks.

  • GMail is now, May 8th, down again with error-code 500. It really sucks. If they aren’t able to provide this service, they should stop it.
