Google China To Dismiss Censorship or Retire In The Name Of Freedom

Google users from China cannot taste the full search experience because the company has an “agreement” with the Chinese government to censor some searches like the massacre from the Tiananmen Square and if you are from China then you probably cannot read this article due to censorship. Google officially announced on its official blog that it won’t censor the searches on Google.cn because hundreds of Gmail accounts of human rights activists were compromised. Although Google avoided saying this, the company clearly thinks that the Chinese government was involved in the “sophisticated and targeted attacks.”

According to the blog post, Google will retire from China if the Chinese government will not agree with the new rules. Censorship is bad in so many ways and Google promotes the freedom of speech therefore the company cannot accept to run a filtered search engine in China. I am aware that people outside China don’t realize that things are so bad in the Asian countries, but I’ve read some testimonies from Chinese people saying that they have to use better and better proxies or other filters in other to enjoy a decent web experience.

I don’t know how well is Google.cn doing, however, if Google retires from China other search engines who comply to the Chinese government’s rules will have to gain a lot from this. Let’s just wait for a response from the Chinese government before jumping into conclusions.
