Panasonic Launches In-car Blu-ray Player, Goes Unnoticed, But Could Be A Big Hit
You probably know that Blu-ray won the war against HD-DVD last year, however, there is still something that keeps Blu-ray from becoming the most popular “way” to watch movies. DVD is still here and people still love it because DVD players are cheap compared to Blu-ray players, it’s cheaper to buy a movie on DVD than on Blu-ray discs, and DVD doesn’t lack portability unlike Blu-ray. However, this is about to change as Panasonic announced that they will release an in-car Blu-ray player which means that Blu-ray will finally become portable.
Although nobody really noticed this story, and those who did thought that it’s not important, for Blu-ray technology this is probably the best news from the past few months. Panasonic’s in-car Blu-ray player will feature a 7″ display, 40GB storage, GPS, iPhone/iPod compatibility, but also a CD/DVD player.

Well, now your kids will be quite for the entire trip to grandma. Wall-E, Kung Fu Panda, or the upcoming Wolverine movie should do the trick. Consumers will have the possibility to enjoy high definition movies in other places than in their rooms. DVD will not last too much if portable Blu-ray will become a success. I’m sure about that, however, Blu-ray has to become cheaper.
For the moment no pricing was announced for the in-car Blu-ray system, but I expect it to be very expensive. Why? Because it’s Blu-ray and it’s an in-car system. Let’s wait and see how this turns out. From what I’ve noticed, people kinda ignored this announcement and I was pretty disappointed to see that. What are your thoughts about the Panasonic in-car Blu-ray system? Will this be a big success for Blu-ray technology? Would you buy one of these systems?
