A while ago we reported that Apple has rejected the SlingPlayer application for iPhone at AT&T’s request, but later our sources told us that the SlingPlayer will come to the iPhone, but it will be available on via WiFi, just like the Skype for iPhone app. Well, yesterday AT&T made an announcement which said that the SlingPlayer for iPhone is available at the App Store for a price of $29.99. So far so good, however, everybody is disappointed that the TV app is not available via 3G.

AT&T says that applications like SlingPlayer violate their TOS, and if the app will be available via 3G it would create a congestion which will cause a regional outage and many users will not be able to use the network. I remind you that there is a SlingPlayer app for each of BlackBerry, Nokia, and Windows Mobile-based cellphones, and it can be used via 3G, but hey we’re talking about Apple and AT&T here so… we cannot complain too much.
This place-shifted TV application has another problem. Actually it doesn’t have a problem, but all iPhone owners have as it will REALLY cost you if you want to use it. In order to make the SlingPlayer work, you need to buy a SlingBox which has a starting price of $147, and only after that buy the SlingPlayer app which costs $29.99. I dunno about you, but I wouldn’t buy it. Also, you will need a home broadband access in order to make the SlingBox work. I think that AT&T wants you to sell your car, cat, computer, laptop, and even your mother if you want to enjoy mobile TV only through WiFi.
Well, I’ve got nothing to say about the application which runs smoothly even if it’s only in early stages and we could see some updates coming soon. Updates may be coming, but what about some discounts?
