If you are from Europe and a Vodafone subscriber, then you are a very happy person as the company has become the first carried to remove extra-charges in roaming. This means that if you are Vodafone subscriber and you leave for another country, then will be charged the same as if you were at home. Although Vodafone denies it, this is a result of new EU regulations which wants to cut down the costs of using a cellphone abroad.

Many people go on vacation and they still want to use their mobile phones to send SMS or pictures to their friends and family therefore the EU decided to “force” mobile carriers to cut down data costs so that users won’t “gather” phone bills of hundreds of euros. Vodafone said that they didn’t take this measure due to EU regulations. The carrier announced that this is now possible thanks to the competition and as of June 1 customers will have the possibility to talk, send SMS and MMS from 35 countries at the same price as at home.

In order to use these new charging system, Vodafone customers will have to active the Passport option. Vodafone’s decision will probably force other carriers to take such measures and we couldn’t be any happier. This is a good decision for mobile users. Let’s see if this affects carriers from the US, but it is very unlikely as they don’t care too much about their subscribers.
