The Heel Stick Test Can Find Potential Genetic Disorders In Newborns

I know you care about your baby or your upcoming baby, and although I don’t know how it’s like to be a parent, here is a way to prevent your child from being affected by a genetic disorder which could eventually be fatal. There is a test called Heel Stick and which should be performed on every newborn child as it could save his life. I know there are many of you who have a relative with a genetic disorder, but I also know that the rest of you don’t. You might that your baby is proof from genetic disorders, but this is not true as a child might have a recessive gene which could get activated.

Heel Stick Test

The Heel Stick test can determine if a newborn is prone to a disability, mental retardation, or to other disorders which could prevent him living a normal life or to cause death. This test is performed within the first 48 hours of a baby, and a nurse will prick the heel of a baby and then tale about 10 drops of blood and take it to a special lab to test it. Some would recommend that you should take two 0r three Heel Stick tests just to make sure that the results are accurate.

The Heel Stick can detect up to five categories of genetic disorders like amino acid metabolism disorders, organic acid metabolism disorders, fatty acid oxidation disorders, hemoglobinopathies and sickle cell diseases, and other disorders like ongenital hypothyroidism, Biotinidase deficiency, and Congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
