Google’s 47 million years old ‘missing link found’ logo is the Darwinius masillae

May 20th, 2009

Yesterday, scientists found the missing link in evolution, a 47 million years old called Ida. They call it the Darwinius masillae ( Darwin’s theory of evolution ), which is also knows as the missing list between humans and apes. With this occasion, Google is using a special logo that features, Ida, the fossile.

Missing Link Found

John Hurum is the scientist who studied the fossil and he said Ida will be seen in textbooks for the next century, being more important than the Lost Ark and the Holy Grail.

You can read more about it here.

  • They found “the” missing link?

What technology did they use to assert it is 47 million years old?

How does that even remotely resemble a human being?

This is a ridiculous assumption. Way to go Google in eating up total humanist speculation.

  • Carbon-14 dating you ignorant being.

  • Paulisretarded / May 20, 2009 at 3:25 pm

It’s called carbon-dating, Paul, and just because you think it doesn’t look entirely human doesn’t mean there aren’t similarities in bone fusion. Check your retarded creationism at the door.

  • “…which is also knows as the missing list between humans and apes.”

What the heck are you trying to say here? Missing link story not important enough to edit or spell check?

  • Paul you are stupid!!!

  • Yes, Paul, in fact Jesus put that fossil in the ground a couple thousand years ago. It was his pet dog, Fido. Either that or it was one of the animals on Noah’s ark that fell overboard.

  • 47 million years old?!?! That’s way too old for a ‘missing link’ between apes and humans. This is just a way to attack those that question evolution and try to shut down the intelligent design people. I believe that evolution exists and I’ve very uncomfortable about how the so called science media and mainstream media is handling this story. We are going to look like the global warming alarmists with this type of reaction to a new fossil. Think about it! About how old would a missing link fossil have to be?

  • Paul your just a stupid christian

  • Take it easy, why do so many people doubt new discoveries? We should be excited that this new discovery was made and not be arguing if it is the missing link or not. Evolution is a no brainer unless you are too wrapped up in a fairy tale book to see that.

  • The technology is science.

It’s called 47 million years of evolution.

    Google rocks.

  • Paul:

The technology they used is called carbon dating. It resembles a human being because of its relatively short limbs, opposable thumbs, and clawless fingers with nails. There’s more, but I don’t think you’re interested in hearing it.

  • hey paul, evolution is real! clearly you don’t know much about the subject or carbon dating methods etc. sounds like you are just eating up total religious speculation (let’s call it fiction!)

  • (Paul)This is a ridiculous comment. Way to go Paul for judging before anything is furthermore looked into, as speculation should always be made, way to write it off when you don’t know any answers yourself. Your ridiculously transparent.

  • “What technology did they use to assert it is 47 million years old?”

Radiocarbon dating. If you don’t know what that is, jfgi.

“How does that even remotely resemble a human being?”

47 million years is a long span of time. If all you can grasp is a 6000 year old Earth, then it would only make sense that humans resemble humans. The fact is, is that it doesn’t look human, but that’s what evolution does over millions of years.

“This is a ridiculous assumption. Way to go Google in eating up total humanist speculation.”

I’m glad they’re sticking it to people like you. Go use Yahoo – you yahoo.

  • first off paul, they can age the specien using the radium technique in surrounding rocks and other minerals within the remains themself, which is unquestionably accurate.

secondly, it isn’t going to LOOK like a human, though it has many biological similarities to humans, becuase 47 million years of evolution will change its appearence.
in 47 million years from now, all humans may have taken on a different form depending on our changing environment.

trust me paul, the worlds greatest scientist dont speculate their job is to seek out the truth, ida is indeed a remarkable find and you should feel humbled to be alive to see its dicovery.

  • The fossil does not resemble a human being, but bridges an evolutionary gap between humans and our ancient ancestors.

How does that even remotely resemble a human being?

This is a ridiculous assumption. Way to go Google in eating up total humanist speculation.

  • Naw son, it is said to be a link between lower mammals and the group that includes both us and primates. It remotely resembles a human in terms of its ankle bone. Woot for remoteness. Both camps need to calm down a bit.

  • Well Paul, if that is your real name, maybe you should research before asking stupid questions and stating that it is a ridiculous assumption. To start off with, they used radiometric dating of Messel’s volcanic rocks, they discovered it lived 47 million years ago in the Eocene period. Second, they didn’t say it resembled a human being. It is one of the earliest mammals that the scientists who examined it has seen, and is at the base of the anthropoid branch which leads to monkeys, apes, and humans. In short, one of our oldest primate ancestors. It has opposable thumbs, it had nails instead of claws, and an important discovery is the shape of the talus bone in her foot, which humans still have in their feet millions of lifetimes later.

Does that answer your questions Paul? Don’t say stupid things, even on the internet.

  • Fake Faux Name / May 21, 2009 at 2:59 am

    Radiometric dating, dipshit.

  • Fake Faux Name / May 21, 2009 at 2:59 am

    Radiometric dating.

  • Shut the hell up paul. its 47 million years old obviously its not gonna look exactly like a human. the evolutionary process is slow if you would only open your mind youd realize that.

  • I just goes to show if the media puts it out there it has to be right (right?)… I think its very impractical to put news out there before the evidence proves what is being said. Its like saying the house across the street is on fire when in reality its just a camp fire in the backyard.

  • Arezu Sarvestani / May 21, 2009 at 3:13 am

The fossil was not found yesterday (Tuesday), that’s just when researchers finally unveiled it. It was actually found in 1983.

  • According to the “all humans came out of Africa” theory, modern humans emerged from Africa some 50,000 years ago. While this supposed ancestor of humans discovered in Germany is said to be 47 million years old. So let me get this straight, according to PC scientific thought, these missing link human ancestors lived in Germany, but migrated to Africa, where they then evolved into humans and eventually made their way back to Germany? Am I missing something here or has it really gotten this silly?

  • Arezu Sarvestani / May 21, 2009 at 3:15 am

Also, Paul clearly has no understanding of how evolution works. Not every one of the creatures that is part of the human lineage looks like a human. Nor does it need to.

  • Evolution is just a theory which is not accepted by half of the Americans.
There are millions of muslims and other religion members in the world who believe in a intelligent designer.

Google as a search engine has no right to make such a logo.
Personally I lost all my sympathy to Google after seeing this logo.
    TO GOOGLE:
Please respect the beliefs of your users.
Don’t show a stupid theory like a fact, don’t mislead people.

  • I doubt this is the “missing link” between humans and apes because genetically speaking everything is interrelated and we could also claim to be just as related to dolphins or whales – maybe everything on earth is related because that is how we were created?!? But i love the logo and the fact that you use your search engine to spark learning – way to go – keep up the good work. By the way – ever seen an x-ray of a fruit bat? looks like a human with wings!

  • paul…try taking an introductory physical-anthro class in your community college since i auume they wouldnt take your kind to a grad school…

  • they can tell how old it is by the type of rock around the bones paul. before u make a comment make sure you know what your talking about before you make a stupid comment.

  • yeah, no kidding, if it was carbon dating, that has made so many mistakes it shouldn’t be concidered credible.
Besides what proves that its not just a prehistoric monkey, not a human?

what in 47 million more years will super smart monkeys look at our skeletons and say, “Hey! it looks moderately like us, maybe that was us a long time ago”
    they wont really..

  • I assume their dating is accurate. They found the fossil back in the early eighties and if it has taken them 26 years for them to come out with such a profound statement then i think that they made pretty damn sure they were right. It may not look like a human being because its not a human being! a T-Rex doesn’t look like a bird…but that’s what happened to it. Its no speculation on if it is related to the Homo Sapien…. Ever wonder why you have a tail bone??? Well that picture may sure as hell help you understand…
Way to go jumping to assumptions and making ridiculous claims before you read more on the subject.

  • This is such a joke to academia. Science should be based upon repeatable data, otherwise it is only theory. Theory and true science are not the same. True scientific findings remain true and consistent throughout time (ie. physics laws), but theories can be disproved. This is one isolated fossil, that people are trying to build an entire theory around. Maybe we should look for science in the circus side show exhibits.

  • Merely playing DEVILS ADVOCATE:

I don’t know where you guys get your information about carbon dating. But it’s only good up to 60,000 years.

    Do some research.

  • There are some special warnings that apply to acquiring Messel fossils. There are three types of fossils that sometimes appear on the market from this deposit that should be avoided due to their lack of value and authenticity. Since the real fossils are prepared in resin, it is easy to create fakes or fossils made from the rock negatives where no real fossil substance exists. These are worthless casts and it is important to be able to identify the difference. The following Messel fossils are to be avoided and are nothing more than copies of the real thing. One key factor to determining if the fossil is genuine is to look for crisp detail of the skeleton or soft body tissue under magnification. Sometimes, the organic preserved remains retain a variation of colors. AVOID DEALER INVENTORIES WHERE ALL THEIR MESSEL FOSSILS OF THE SAME TYPE OF ANIMAL LOOK THE SAME COLOR. They are probably not real.

  • Go to hell all of you

  • You’re all wrong, judging by the hinged middle arms and supported lower legs, it is quite clear that this is the skeletal remains of one of the seven lost babies of Godzilla..
