iPhone 3GS Unveiled At Apple WWDC 2009
This is what Sprint and Palm feared: the new iPhone. As you probably know, the Apple WWDC 2009 took place today. Well, this year’s conference was great too as Apple unveiled a new iPhone, some price cuts, the release date of the iPhone OS 3.0, and many other minor details. We are more concerned about the next-gen iPhone which, as reported earlier, will be called iPhone 3GS and which will be based on the iPhone OS 3.0 that will be released on June 17th.

The iPhone 3GS features a faster processor, a new and improved camera with autofocus, auto-exposure, and auto white-balance. The new camera also features a special macro and low-light modules, and when you can focus by tapping; and when you do that, the white balance will automatically adjust. The camera’s improvements continue with video support shooting at 30fps with autofocus, auto-exposure, and auto white-balance. The videos can be shared on YouTube, on MobileMe, or via MMS and e-mail.
As expected, the iPhone 3GS features faster 3G with a new 7.2Mbps HSDPA standard connectivity. The graphics have also been improved as the new hardware now supports OpenGL|ES standard for users to place more complex 3D games. As for the design, I have to say that it’s the same, but nobody asked for more. However, Apple is thinking green, and the materials are now more eco-friendly: Mercury-free LCD, BDF-free, and Arsenic-free glass.
The iPhone 3GS features a built-in magnetometer, a compass application to work with the magnetometer, and with the new maps. Orientation on longitude and latitude will also make a difference on the new maps.
The new iPhone also features Voice Control which will give users the possibility to “ask” for songs, or to call someone from your contacts list. Apple also says that the iPhone 3GS supports text zooming, video inverting, and other accessibiltiy features. Other significant changes were made to the battery as users will be able to talk 12 hours in 2G, 5 hours in 3G, 30 hours of audio playback, 10 hours of video playback, and 9 hours of WiFi use.
The iPhone 3GS will be available on June 19 in two versions: 16GB/32GB for $199/$299.
