Sadly, iPhone Activation Server Is Temporarily Unavailable

June 17th, 2009

You probably know that the iPhone OS 3.0 was released a few hours ago, and although everything should be OK, it’s not like that as many users are experiencing problems with updating to the new OS. Users are receiving an error which says that iPhone Activation Server is temporarily unavailable which means that they have to say goodbye to the iPhone OS 3.0 at least for now. We were expecting this as everybody is waiting for the new features so that they have a better iPhone.

iPhone owners should have received most of these new features a long time ago, however, Apple decided to wait for a while. Well, I’m sorry if you didn’t update yet due to the fact that the iPhone Activation Server is temporarily unavailable, but these things sadly happens when you don’t want them to happen.

You can try and download the iPhone OS 3.0 here.

  • So that’s it… any word on when it’s going to be backup? man…

  • It’s typical and sad as you say.

  • I finally got it…just keep trying.

  • hey just disconnect your computer from the internet while its unpacking the firmware and it should go by smoothly.

  • do you know when i will be available again.. is it saying this cause everybody with a iphone try to download os 3.0 all at the same time.. its really pissing me off cause im so ready to see all the new updates

  • Wow this is the most pointless article ive ever read. Thank you for posting absolutely no useful information.

  • Your pritty dumb? / June 17, 2009 at 1:41 pm

Why the hell did you even publish this? it doesn’t help does it. And WHY the apple web site to download the 3.0 software. I mean WOW. REALLY?!! YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE APPLE 3.0 UPDATE OF THE APPLE WEBSITE. OMG I WOULD HAVE NEVER HAVE THOUGHT OF THAT. stupid softsailor

  • A trick I read on another forum that finally worked for me.

After you hit the update button, while it is extracting disconnect from the internet. The update will continue to go through. (Easiest way is to have network adapters window open and disable your adapter immediately after telling it to update.

I am up and running 3.0 now

  • I have been trying to upgrade for hours now. It keeps giving me the same error.
What will it take for the damn upgrade?

  • I got the update to work by disabling my Internet connection, and then running the update =)

  • to get around that just disconnect from the internet while the software is extracting. i did it by unplugging my LAN cable. once the install is done plug it back in and you’re running 3.0

  • 1. (with an internet connection) Plug your iPhone into your PC
    2. Download the 3.0 update
    3. Receive the error message.
    4. Unplug your iPhone from your PC
    5. Disconnect from the internet
    6. Plug your iPhone back into your PC
    7. Accept the installation
    8. Reconnect to the internet
    9. The install will proceed

  • This is complete BS, if apple didn’t try and control the update process so much this wouldn’t be a problem. I just finished the download of the 3.0 OS in itunes and when I went to install it said that the activations servers were not available. So from a tech point of view, why the heck does it need to connect to the server if the download is finished? Btw the way, apple shorteded us on features anyways, the only thing people were looking forward too was Teathering, and MMS both of which won’t work.

  • to avoid the action server unavailable error message, press restore instead of update when installing 3.0

  • Just keep spamming the upgrade button — I was in after @ 15 tries.

  • Just saw this on another site, thought I’d share :

“disconnect from the internet whilst the package is expanding and iPhone 3.0 will install without checking in with Apple

Just done this with my iPhone… works a treat…”

  • To get around this error, just disconnect from the internet immediately after hitting the update button. You can do this by either disabling your wireless connection or unplugging your wired connection.

It will take up to 2 minutes for the authorization check to time out, but then it will install the software with no hitches.

  • this sucks ass, i hate apple

  • hWHAT THE BALLZ!?

  • This is bullshit!! Apple is always on top of it! Why is this happening? Last minute legal BS with AT&T? AaaarrrhhH!!!

  • Hi all,

With the server being temp. unavailable its been hard to update my iphone to OS3.
But its just because of the amount of people that try to use the same connection at the same time..

Just keep trying a couple of times, itll update..

    just a bit of congestion

  • iphone activation server error message work around – for the iPhone activation server issue. disconnect your internet connection during the extraction process and u can go online after the update starts.

  • So,what does this mean? We have to wait until the server is back up? Or are we just plain out of luck?

  • while it’s extracting the update, DISCONNECT from the internet until the update is done. worked fine for me. seems to bypasses activation if it gets that far and will install the update just fine

  • Try “Repairing” your network connection. On a hunch, I did this and the Activation Server is suddenly responding and my 3.0 upgrade is happening. Go to Network Connections, right-click the connection you are using and select Repair Connection.

  • That download link just takes you to the iphone page on apple and gives you instructions on how to download via iTunes… not very helpful!

  • I’ve just tried it again through iTunes and it’s updating!! woop!

  • I have found an Illustration of the Problem: http://digg.com/u15zwq

  • I’ve just got mine to update. I’d installed the latest version of iTunes but not rebooted. Having rebooted its installed first time.

I’ve seen another possible fix (not verified) on a forum… disconnect from the internet whilst the package is expanding and iPhone 3.0 will install without checking in with Apple (seen here http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?s=2b46dc57a1d91b52da00a4fc552ce1e7&p=538569#post538569 )

    Hope this helps some folks

  • hey there is an easy fix to download the update!!
I just tried this and am downloading it now, just start extracting the update and disconnect from the internet, so itunes cannot try to contact their server. Then the software starts downloading just like normal!

Disable net when iTunes is extracting.. It will bypass server check, once it’s updating, switch net back on..

    It WORKS!!!!!

  • just disconnect internet during extraction and it will install without checking in with apple and then connects to itunes after install

  • Here is the solution:

Disconnect from the internet while the install package is expanding

    http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?p=538553#post538553

  • Just now I was able to complete the update and not get the “registration server temporarily unavailable” message. So far everything looks good, although it did take a while.

If you disconnect your internet connection during the “Extracting files” portion of the update, it will skip the Activation Server step and complete the install.
