Palm Pre was the most expected gadget of the year. Before its launch everybody was talking about it every day, but the frenzy is kinda over. However you can’t say that the Pre launch was a fail as in 18 days Sprint and Palm sold about 150,000 units which is fair enough. Being a CDMA smartphone the Palm Pre cannot be sold everywhere, but I think that after it goes to Verizon the sales will increase by much.

We are gathered here to celebrate the 1,000,000 download of a Palm Pre app from the App Catalog. The launch day saw 50,000 people buying the Pre, and 100,000 app downloads, while the 18th day of Pre saw 150,000 units sold, and 1,000,000 apps downloaded. Although the App Catalog and the Palm Pre weren’t as successful as the iTunes Store and the iPhone, you should consider the fact that at Pre launch day there were only 18 apps available at the App Catalog, while the iTunes Store had about 300 apps available for download.

Now the iTunes Store has more than 50,000 apps in stock, while the App Catalog has only 30. Apple has reached one billion downloads, while Palm one million. I’m sure both numbers will increase, and that Palm Pre users are very satisfied with their smartphone. Let us know how do you feel about the App Catalog and the Palm Pre!

  • I love my Pre! All this talk about lack of apps is crazy! I looked through over 2,000 Apple iPhone apps and only found ONE that I would have been interested in!!! I use the Pre’s weather, GPS, email (this one is EASY), calendar, contacts, web browser, camera, calculator, music (I manually download from iTunes), clock (an alarm clock that played music would be nice),and, oh yea, the phone. I just added Evernote (great program)! I don’t know what else I would need or have time for, after all, I have to work for a living. How many programs do you need? How many do you use on your computer? I am more than satisfied with the Palm Pre and its apps. Great UI, too!

In a nutshell, iPhone killer. And yes, this one actually accomplishes the task. This does hurt me to say, since I am typing this on a great MacBook Pro, but Apple was finally beaten. The question is for how long. After two weeks of waiting (and what seemed to be months!) I finally got my hands on a Palm Pre. The only thing that needs to serious work is the battery life, and arguably, the speed of the music app. Absolutely everything else is just as competitive (if not better) as the iPhone 3G S. The multitasking ability is genius in the way it was designed. The keyboard, although small (my thumb easily covers 6 keys), is extremely effective. The software has a superior UI to the iPhone, in my opinion. Although because of the extra capabilities of the phone, it does take some getting used to (unlike the iphone, which comes natural). The app catalog is small, but its only just beginning. I think that with Palm’s synergy, some amazing apps could be accomplished. The touch screen is extremely responsive, the camera is excellent (PC Mag said it was horrible, as well as other things. I cannot read them any longer), software is smooth, calendar is perfectly made, it syncs perfectly with my mac, notifications are awesome, etc.

The reason iPhone got longer lines in it’s debut was because it was the first major touch screen smartphone to hit the markets. Imagine the excitement: a full touch screen phone…. with an iPod! Yes. The Pre is most certainly a superior device, and again, it hurts to say it (sorry Apple, REALLY sorry), but Palm has my complete satisfaction and commitment as a mobile customer that ALWAYS keeps up with the latest devices. Also, very important to mention that ATT’s 3G network is, in fact, slower than Sprint’s 3G network. Also, with Sprint being the first to introduce 4G into the line, who knows what Palm can do with these speeds with webOS?!

The only real negative is the Battery life. Also, if people have heard of bugs, well a vast majority have been fixed in the third update. My phone all of a sudden seems to work even faster and smoother. Ha, those ex-applers sure know how to do their job. Go Rubenstein!

    GREAT JOB, PALM.

  • Love my pre! I got it first day. I had some issues with a battery but seem that I found a solution: 1. I let pre to run out of ‘juice’ completely just one time 2. If you don’t use GPS often – turn it off. 3 turn off WIFI and Bluetooth if you don’t need it. Now with a normal use I still have about 43% battery by the end of the day.

  • I’m with others here in that I absolutely LOVE my Pre. I’ve had it for 3 weeks now, and it’s been a joy to use this phone.

I bought a 32gb iPod Touch last year to try most of the iPhone’s capabilities without committing to AT&T. The Pre runs circles around the Apple user interface, and the keyboard…my typing accuracy has gone from about 60% on the Touch, to 98% on the Pre! Predictive typing is ok to a point, but is endlessly annoying when you’re trying to search for “Palm Pre,” and the Touch keeps changing it to “Palm ore,” or you start typing your user name “z_man….,” but the Touch insists you’re “a_man….”

The lack of apps for Pre to this point seems like a downer, but as I considered the apps I’ve put on my Touch (10 games), I realized I’m not missing much anyway; I certainly haven’t missed anything truly productive on the Touch! And so many of the apps for that platform are just plain dumb; a virtual beer glass, sub-sonic mosquito repellent (which you can’t hear, of course), and a “fart” machine…c’mon! Even as entertaining as the games I’ve bought for the Touch have been, I’ve never been willing to pay more than 99 cents for any of them. Seems like everybody’s looking to become the next millionaire by selling junk, and it’s a sad commentary that they’re succeeding.

All that said, I am anxious to see what starts popping up by way of apps on the Pre :) It’s still fun to just “shop.”
