AVG identifies small.BOG trojan horse or virus in iTunes
AVG antivirus users have noticed in the last 24 hours that the software identifies two iTunes files as a virus. The two files, iTunes.dll and iTunesRegistry.dll are detected by AVG as being infected with small.BOG trojan horse, which doesn’t even seem to exist in other antivirus databases, which is pretty weird.
A lot of AVG and Apple forums have been blasted with messages related to the small.BOG trojan horse and until now we don’t have any official word from AVG or Apple, but it seems to be a kind of joke from somebody in the AVG team.
We are not 100% sure that those files don’t contain a virus, but also there isn’t any proof that they are, so you should add an exception in AVG and make sure not to quarantine or delete them if you want iTunes to keep working.
We will keep you updated. Make sure to subscribe so you will be the first to find out what’s happening.

Is it safe to create an exception and then keep using itunes? Does that mean that itunes will not be scanned for viruses?
Sorry if thats a simple question, I’m not so computer savvy when it comes to this sort of thing…
We can’t be 100% sure if it’s safe, but it should be, because chances are that it’s a false alarm.
I spent all day downloading over 10 gig of music to have AVG crash my itunes. I cant even re-install it now. Disabled AVG and still cant install itunes. Any suggestions?
Tont- same thing just happened to me.
Uninstall AVG
Download and run the itunes install program…it’ll let you choose “repair” so you don’t lose anything
Find another antivirus program or go bareback for a while until AVG fixes this
I have actually solved this problem tonight. Disabling AVG isn’t enough. You have to remove it from your computer. Follow these steps.
- Completely remove AVG. You might be able to retain the settings and vault but I deleted everything.
- Download and install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 or try using Add/Remove programs.
Completely uninstall iTunes and all of its components in this order:
- Apple Mobile Device Support
- Apple Software Update
- Bonjour (not sure the order of removal for this one is important but it worked)
- QuickTime
- iTunes
– Delete any other Apple related software but that should be it.
– Personally, I disable any anti-virus and firewall at this point.
Download and install iTunes from apple.com/itunes/download.
Everything should work perfectly from that point.
Note: Previous attempts to solve the problem had resulted in portions of iTunes already being removed. It might work to just remove AVG and see if iTunes will work from that point. You might be able to open AVG go to History > Vault and restore the pertinent files.
if you follow these instructions itunes will open succesfully:
1) open AVG
2) go to TOOLS then click ADVANCED SETTINGS
3) go down to where it says EXCEPTIONS then click at the top right, ADD PATH
4) then navigate to C:\Program Files\iTunes\ and click OK.
5) then navigate to C:\Program Files\iPod\ an click OK
6) Then click APPLY and then OK
7) Restart PC(computer)
**note** (step 6, may not may available to find for everyone, but if you do see, the ipod folder under program files then go ahead and continue this way)
Let me know if it worked for you. BEST OF LUCK
Hey thanks luis I just finished following what you posted and it worked like a charm! My story was that avg got the newest itunes update detected as a trojan so I immediately try to remove it and accidentally screwed up whatever version of itunes I had installed since it now missed files to open up correctly.
Then I grabbed my OLDDD copy of the itunes install cd (back then the music note was green) that came with my 1st ipod to see if I could get a 2005 version working. Nope! so it’s pretty much Avg screwing… I think it is a prank
was I scared I had lost my music.
Ok so I decided to not change anything in my system both itunes nor AVG. I kept trying to update AVG (I have AVG 8.5 the non-free version and windows vista) and just 2 mins ago was finally able to get an AG update.
Once the update came through my itunes opens perfectly.
DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME CHANGING ANYTHING!!
I WANT THE FUCKER WHO DID THIS PUT IN MOTHER FUCKING JAIL.
I already uninstalled my iTunes.
Ugh. Stupid motherfucking AVG. I knew it was a bad idea to install it.
LIZA’S ADVICE WORKED!
So i updated my AVG and now i can open iTunes. I’m still so mad because all the artwork and some of the songs I had are gone now.
My itunes has been open and running all day. I just updated AVG and I made all the changes to the settings in exceptions that luis suggesed. I actually had 3 sets of ipod program files and 2 sets of itunes program files. Am I going to be okay? Itunes and AVG are currently both running. The only thing I haven’t done today is attempt to sync the ipod. AVG hasn’t run a system scan since 7/23/09.
My wifes PC seems like the AVG has screwed things up though. Should i just follow the uninstall route? AVG found 178 infections. It removed and healed 73 and not removed and healed 105.
alright, now that avg has fixed the problem, just update it to make sure it has the update. Remove the exeptions, and then restart your pc. you should be able to open itunes with no problem
thanks. i’ll follow your advice on my pc. then do the removal/reinstallation on hers.
I can’t believe this…I also already unistalled iTunes only to find AVG is the issue…
