Microsoft and Nokia were once fierce rivals, however, both companies have become quite good friends. The two giants said yesterday that they will make an annoucement today. The announcement concerns an alliance between the two, and although it’s not official yet, Microsoft and Nokia will sign an agreement which will see the software maker provide Office for the phone maker and its Symbian OS.

According to a WSJ report, Microsoft will develop an Office suite expecially designed for Symbian-based smartphones in order to fight against Google, and Sun. Nokia and Microsoft are reached probably too many agreements now, but Symbian and Windows Mobile are no longer the only OS for smartphones. Since Apple with iPhone OS, RIM with BlackBerry OS, and Google with Android OS emerged on the market, Microsoft signed a deal with Nokia which allows users of Nokia smartphones to access emails via Microsoft Exchange.

The thins is that Microsoft wants to threaten Google’s web apps including word processors, spreadsheets, calendar and many others with an Office suite for all Symbian OS-based Nokia smartphones. The Microsoft Office for Nokia phones will be very similar with the one found on Windows Mobile devices.

At the moment it is unknown if Microsoft will reach an agreement with RIM for an Office suite for BlackBerry smartphones. It is known that DataViz Inc. already develops a software which allows BlackBerry users to open MS Office files.
