Sony Unveils New PS3 Console At GamesCon: The PS3 Slim Is Real

We expected GamesCon to come packed with so many features, but this is what we have really been expecting for a while. The rumors about a PS3 Slim circulated on the web for months in a row, however, such things are gone now as Sony has unveiled the new console at the GermanĀ convention. The PS3 Slim is surprisingly cute and very cool, and the good thing is that it will be available in less than a month.

The PS3 Slim is very small, lightweight, and it features a 120GB HDD, but other than that, the features are almost the same. The PS3 Slim consumes 34% less power, requires 32% less space, 36% lighter, and it’s very, very, very quiet. Sony’s latest gaming console will cost only $300, just like the existing 80GB PS3 therefore we think you should wait for the new one to show up on the market.

Sony announced that the PS3 Slim will be available on September 1 in North America and Europe, while Japan is getting the console on September 3. The console will come packed with the PS3 Firmware 3.0 that will also be available for regular PS3 consoles. The PS3 Slim features BRAVIA Sync which gives users the possibility to control the PS3 XMB via HDMI thanks to BRAVIA’s TV remote control. Another feature is called System Standby which will turn off the console then the Sony BRAVIA TV is turned off.

If you’d like a vertical stand for your PS3 Slim then you’ll have to pay $24 for it. Sony also announced that the new PS3 is not compatible with another OS, meaning that you cannot install Linux anymore on your console, and that it’s not compatible with PS2 just like its PS3 fat brothers.

Check out the pictures below and let us know what do you think about the new PS3 Slim!

  • The original PS3 is so loud I can’t stand it. I am really, really hopeful the slim is quieter. I have been contemplating buying another Blu-Ray player for the simple reason the PS3 get’s hot and it’s 400 fans kick on and drown out the movie we’re watching.

  • Much better looking. Xbox is still better even with the PS3 facelift and price reduction. This is just an attempt for Sony to sell more of what the rest of us call an inferior product. Sony won the Console battle years back. Looks like its Microsoft’s turn this time round!

  • lol, silly XBOX fanbot. The Wii is still winning the console wars. The lead Microsoft has over Sony now is nothing compared to the domination by Sony in the last console war. And speak for yourself when you say the “rest of us” you inferior poster. And in regards to the PS3 being loud… not nearly as loud as the 360. And oh yeah, 54% failure rate (according to a recent Game Informer survey) using old dual layer DVD disc technology for its games. And you say the PS3 is an inferior product? lol, Developers are just too lazy to adjust to the new technology. With the price drop more consumers will buy it meaning more Developers waking up and developing games actually utilizing the PS3’s SUPERIOR capabilities.

$300 for a superior gaming system, free online play, a blu-ray player and you don’t have to pay for an inferior wi-fi extension because it’s built in? The PS3 is going to kick the 360’s ass this holiday season. XBOX fanbots like you just don’t want to admit you’re scared. I’m on my 3rd XBOX and while I enjoy playing on it, Microsoft has pissed me the hell off with their INFERIOR product.

  • I agree with Jake. I have had both a an XBox 360 and a PS3 (note: only own PS3 now) and I by no means would I call the PS3 an inferior product. I got the Red-Ring-of-Death when I had my 360, which was no surprise. After I got it shipped back to me, I eventually sold it and just kept my PS3 which has given me no problems to date.
About the slim PS3, I think it is great (looks?…not really, i like the original). It is better because it is 1/3 lighter, smaller, and more energy efficient, but I think it is too much of a hassle to sell my current PS3, swap my memory and buy a Slim. This, in my opinion, is mostly to get new people to buy this great system, which I think more might.

  • Pretty cool console, i think it looks better than the first one. I found some good videos of the unboxing and gamescon announcement for those who are interested the unboxing goes through more the new features:

  • I have had an Xbox for almost a year now. I have had various problems with the console. The discs have circular scratches on them and no longer play some parts of the game. The new ps3 offer is nice!!! For $300 I would be able to play for free online for the rest of my life and wouldent have to buy the crummy wi fi that i havent purchased yet. More storage space on a ps3 and less disc faliure….. Hmmmmm sounds like a easy choice to me.
