New PS3 Slim Release Date: September 1 For NA and EU, Sep. 3 For Japan

August 19th, 2009

Earlier we reported that Sony unveiled an update to its gaming consoles series: the PS3 Slim. Although it has been rumored for several months, Sony decided that the perfect place and time to release the new PS3 is this summer at GamesCon. We’re upset by the delay, but we’re OK now as we know that the console is coming in two weeks time. We wanted to clear this up as the PS3 Slim will be available for consumers in various markets.

According to Sony, the PS3 Slim will show up in North America and Europe on September 1 for $300, respectively €300. The new PS3 will also be available in Japan but on September 3. I repeat on September 3 for the Japanese, and it will cost ¥29,980. Now that we cleared this up, let us remind you its features.

The PS3 Slim will come packed with a 120GB HDD SATA, 2 x USB port, BRAVIA Sync via HDMI, no Linux and PS2 compatibility, PS3 Firmware 3.0, 32% less space, 34% less power, 36% lighter, Wireless DualShock 3 controller, and a Vertical Stand that will cost a mere $24. Let us know what do you think about the new PS3 Slim and if you’ll buy one in comments.

  • no backwards compatibility, so no, i still wont buy it, some people say “why even play ps2 games anymore?” but really guys, kingdom hearts, finalfantasy (7-12), god of war, jak and daxter, etc!

  • Sony has lost their minds
If they want to win the market PS2 Compatbility and MKV support must be a MUST to have feature

  • Not until it is PS2 compatibile!

  • the current ones arent even ps2 compatible…

  • You can get the app from the market which allows you to play ps2 games, and its free. I have a newer 80gb ps3 and it doesn’t have backwards comp. But like I said I downloaded the app and it works fine plus it makes a mem card on ur hdd( no mem card slots so u have to start all games from beg.)

  • ill buy 9t. my ps3 broke last week so ill replace it with this. backwards compatibility is useless. why would u buy a ps3 to play ps2 games?????? use ur ps2 for tht. i mean.. if u have ps2 games currently u shouldve have beaten the good ones already no? and for 300 bucks. im getting this the day its out.

  • just buy a dayum ps2 then why do you need a ps3 if you just wanna play the old games.

  • the ps3 should have ps2 capabilities because its just easier so you can play your old games and new games on the same console without switching back and forth.

  • cool i’ve been waiting for ps3’s price to drop b4 i bought one so i’l get this the weekend after it comes out^^

  • I’ve got a PS2 for when I want to play PS2 games. Honestly I could care less if its got the ability to play PS2 games or not. It can play PS1 games and I used my PS2 mostly to play PS1 games so I’m a-okay with that. This console won’t get cheaper than $300 until the next gen PS4 comes out so I’m going to be pre-ordering one of these very soon.

I will say I’m disappointed because I like the look of the original PS3s alot more. Not just because it’s bigger, although I do like it being that big, but because the original PS3 has such a beautiful shine to it’s piano black color and the PS3 Slim is rather ugly. However I’m not dropping the same price for 40gb less of a HD by going with the old school 80GB version.

  • Ima Get it. Looks small and pretty tight.Im going to keep my older 80gb Too :P

Cant wait for Drakes Fortune 2!

  • heck ya im buying it, i was gonna get the normal one until this came out. y do u need backwards compatibility. if you have ps2 games obviously u have a ps2, play on that

  • first of all most users already have a ps2 so why even bother with the backwards compatablility.

  • IM DONE With ppl complaining about the fact it has no backwards compatibility. WHO THE HECK WANTS TO BUY A PS3 SO THEY CAN PLAY PS2 GAMES. REALLY, IF YOU STILL PLAY PS2 GAMES AND U HAV A PS3 YOU ARE A F#@KING LOSER.

SO IF YOUR GOING TO POST A COMMENT ABOUT THE BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY. JUST SHOOT YOURSELF IN THE MOUTH CUZ UR A RETARD.

  • The PSN Store does have a add-on which allows you to play PS2 Games and its free.

  • Hellz yes I am going to buy one… I see that bestbuy.com dropped the prices $100 on the old version of the PS3… I have been waiting over a year anticipating the price drop and now the rumors of the PS3 slim have finally come through… I will get one for sure! Just wish it had backwards compatibility so I could continue to play SOCOM online… I guess I can continue to play that on my PS2 though or try the application brian reccomended. I am pumped! Thank you softsailor for the great information!

  • I have a 360(you can call me a devout follower :) ) and been waivering about buying a PS3. But at the time the ps3 was 400$ a bit high up on the price. When i heard about the price drop for the ps3 i was thrilled but when the ps3 slim was confirmed at a mere 299$ I almost jizzed my pants. The non backwards compatibility doesn’t really phase me as I said I am a xbox fanboy since 2003. The firmware 3.0 looks like a welcome upgrade. I will definitely pick this one up to see what the fuss is about for PSN and all the exclusives. Hope to see you guys on PSN(Thankfully free as I spent about 500$ on live and on points as much a PS3 lol)

  • It looks like a modified PS2….. Pretty ugly in my opinion….

I love how the Playstation Fanboys ranted at the 360 about not having full backward capability, but now all of a sudden it doesn’t matter.. LOL

(PS Fanboy at 360 launch) = “The 360 sucks because it doesn’t have full backward capability.”

(PS Fanboy in 2009) = Yeah, who cares about damn backward capability, why buy a PS3 if you’re going to play PS2 games??…

    Hypocrites… :)

  • @The Used I have a xbox that houses all my game saves and files built up from the I think 3 years til the 360 came out. Its true it does not have full backwards copatibility but why do I care if i want to play xbox games ill play on my xbox. And in the first place i wasn’t comparing which companies are better they all have their pros and cons.

  • I’ve been waiting for 2 years for the PS3 price to drop. So yes I will finally be getting one now.

  • Ok. You all with the bad attitude need to get something. Some of us. don’t spend every penny of our paycheck on weed and game systems. some of us don’t want to have 50 of them sitting around the house amongst beer cans and old pizza boxes. My ps3 has a place of distinguishes honor in my entertainment system as the only game console. I don’t feel like stacking game systems all over the room like they’re Rick Wakemans keyboards. I’d like to have one system that would play both. much like the ps2 did and everyone thought that was cool as hell. Now we all spend our time and money on as many systems as we can get our hands on. Some of us aren’t loosers. some of us have girlfriends, some of us have even been married for 15 years and have a life. we don’t need 50 game systems. we need 1. that’s why whe have some desire for backwards compatability. ignorant preteen idiots. I wish I had a mommy that would buy me evrything i wanted too when I screamed loud enough. but some of us can’t buy everything we want.

btw. I like the new slim. I’ll sell my old one and get it. saves space and is cooler in temperature. worth it.

  • I’ve been waiting forever for a price drop – this along with a smaller (less heat producing) model, and I’m very happy. I’ve already pre-ordered it.

However, those who are *still* complaining about backwards compatibility should just use their PS2 for that…duh.

  • I’m buying one when they release or shortly thereafter. I’m not a big gamer, so for $300 it’s a damn good upgradable blu-ray player, and that will be it’s main useage. The fact it’s smaller (smaller than my current clunky DVD player even), uses less energy (a big one for us green types) and is cooler are big bonuses. I especially like the bluetooth remote, since my stuff is all in a rack on the side of the room.

  • I already have one pre-ordered… And I don’t care about the backward compatibility because I have a PS2 already i can just use that and for those of you who are complaining about the backward compatibility you can go on walmart.com and buy a PS2 for 99.00 so quit complaining and buy one.

  • Why does everyone complain about ps2 compatibility? If you own a ps2 you shouldnt be worried about it. Why put those extra hours of run time on your ps3?

  • Think with your dipstick - Jimmy / August 21, 2009 at 5:37 pm

I have an 80Gig Motorstorm Bundle PS3 and I’m thinking about picking up a slim as a spare. $299 is an awesome deal. At that price people who complain about backwards compatibility could buy a PS3 slim and a PS2 slim.

  • HELL YES!!!! I had a PS3 but it broke like 2 months ago. I got it in 2007 and i heard that after about 1 year n a half of having a PS3 it stuffs up. Which is actually good because it doesn’t happen a lot like the Xbox 360 Red Ring Of Death(XBOX SUX). Anyway now that I know that the PS3 slim is true im definately going to get one and my birthday is September 16th so my dad will get me one. But wat sucks is that over here in Australia they are selling the PS3 slim at $500. Stupid fucking exchange rate!!! lol

  • i think its awsome im so buying it

  • my birthday on septemper 19 and im getting tuns of money for my b-day

  • i think is is great im going to buy it as soon as i can becuase the old ps3 started to not read my ps3 only ps2 so hopefully i can get a 100$ profit of my old ps3 and then buy the new ps3 120GB. can wait

  • Well they are def on sale right now. I just got back from Gamestop to preorder one and they already had them in stock… so yeah I bought one on the spot.

  • well resz thats a nice big load of bull****. cz sept 1 means sept 1 u fuckn moron
