PS3 Firmware Update 3.00 Ready For Download – Dynamic Themes Look Great

September 1st, 2009

With the new PS3 now available for the masses, Sony had to release the PS3 Firmware 3.0 and as we heard a couple of weeks ago, the update is now available for download. The new software comes packed with lots of interesting new features like What’s New, Status Indicator, and Trophies, but this is not everything.

The truth is that the new PS3 3.0 firmware should be everything PS3 2.0-2.7 wasn’t. Although it is probably loaded with bugs, I recommend all users to install PS3 Firmware 3.0 in order to get a taste of the full PlayStation experience. Also we’re expecting Sony to launch other minor updates consisting of tweaks and bug fixes this fall and you’ll be OK until then.

PS3 Firmware 3.0 features a new Xross Media Bar, and according to Sony the XMB is now “more intuitive”. Other features are “What’s New” which is basically the old “Information Board” and it will allow you to get the latest PlayStation news about games, releases, updates, videos when you start your console. On the What’s New menu you can also view your recently played games.

The next big thing in PS3 3.0 Update is the Status Indicator which can be found in the top right corner. The indicator bar consists of your icon, friends’ icons, and number of online friends, message icon which lets you know if you received a new message, a scrolling ticker which displays the latest PSN news, and if you press the “PS” button then the Battery Life indicator will stop covering the clock.

The latest PS3 firmware also features an improved Friends List. Sony decided to redesign the friends in a more “futuristic” way, and now you can view the messages from each of your PSN friends at each of their respective profile.

Thanks to PS3 Firmware 3.0 users can personalize their PS3 with custom themes and avatars which will be available at the PlayStation Store. There will be free and premium themes which will allow users to put animated objects on their background.

The new PS3 update 3.0 comes with PlayStation Store Shortcuts which can be found under the Game and Videos categories. This new feature will allow users to access the latest games and videos faster.
“Trophies” is now an improved feature and it allows developers to modify the way the trophies are displayed of the add-on content. All add-on trophies will be lists next to the base trophies as a single list is better than several lists. This allows users to see where they stand with ease, and the will see where their game needs to be improved.

PS3 Firmware 3.0 also gives users the possibility to control the video playback meaning that they can fast forward, rewind, and watch in slow motion. Another feature is the simultaneous audio output across connectors which will be found very helpful by most gamers.

  • First of all I have a ps3. Why do they waste their time and effort on meaningless stuff like this? So…they payed people to come up with not having to go one click to the right or left to access the store? Yeah, that was so hard to do. Now I can see what my last played game is? First of all, why would I care what my last played game is? It’s not like people are writing angry comments on the forums complaining about not having easier access to the store. Does anyone out there really care about what they played? Isn’t the only thing you care about is what you are going to play? By the way…I’m the one who played it so I know what game it was.

Animated themes? Really? People at Sony thought this was relevant and important? Sony payed people all that money over all that time and they came up with animated themes to make the system better and impress people? How many people turn on their ps3’s to stare at the theme? Are people really that easily impressed and amused now to entertain themselves with popcorn and soda by staring at an animated theme over a period of time? “Oh look, part of my theme moves.” Yeah, the update is thrilling.

  • How about updating the bowser? That would be a nice update. My PSP browser never freezes like the PS3 one. How about a personal avatar like the wii? Something that goes way beyond minor tweaks. Look to the PSP to see what people really want.

i feel in love with xbox360 avatars

  • i will install it for my PS3. I would like to try the custom themes.

  • Hey, im 20% or so downloading the 3.00 update, i dont really think it wil b that different. apart from the battery life covering the time, that really did annoy me. Il post again wen its installed :P

    Brad.

  • Maybe it’s because they wanted to make the XMB menu more fun and intuitive?
So why don’t you just shut up and enjoy it Mr Who Cares.

Nobody cares about your negative opinion.

  • I agree why put such a downer on the update? unless youve installed it and you think its worse than the old 1, what room do you have to critisize sony?

    32% :P

    Brad.

  • I installed it earlier in the morning today and i do like the tiny changes they made to the xmb but they werent really neccesary…

  • I have to agree with whocares in some ways i’m downloading it at the moment but reading what they have improved i think they have got there priorities wrong, yes i think all the improvments will be much better but for all the people out there that play online with friends all we REALLY want is to be able to talk and be in games together so how about making an update similar to the xbox and let us talkto each other regardless of what game we are playing.

  • Why wont they update the trophies for the PS3. Having looked at the XBOX360 games, they almost ALL have trophies where the exact same game for the PS3 doesn’t. they should make the developers of the games to go back and sumit in a big patch.

  • Bravo! Bravo!

Love the simple chenges to the XMB!

But i do agree with PS3/360 owner, as i also own a 360 and love being able to talkt o my friends regardless who’s playing what.

    Brad.

  • I dont know what all the fuzz is all about!? I´ve installed the update, and I’m very disapointed. I thought it would be more changes and coolt stuff. But its just the same besides some minor changes (XMB, posibility for multible sound settings, friends list, “Whats new”). Thats about it I think.

In their official forum (@ playstation.com) there is still no information about whats included in the 3.0 relase.

    Are you depressed?

  • I keep hoping the new updates will include ps2 compatibility for those of us who don’t have it. I know, keep dreaming.

  • who cares (not the top who cares) / September 1, 2009 at 7:57 am

who cares, its a minor xmb tweak with some new stuff, were yall complaining when they made the xmb available ingame? i dont think so. if you dont download it then you cant play online. and what is there to do offline? nada.

  • BBC iplayer is a nice touch which no one has mentioned yet, not sure the rest of the changes make any difference they just seem to be short cuts to get to things that to be honest didn’t really need a short cut. Oh yeah mustn’t forget now it looks like its snowing on the XMB, lol. I checked the store for the new themes but can’t seem to find any yet, but that could just be my fault!!

  • I was depressed Dirty Harry until I had the honor and privilege of you responding to my comment. Now I feel all giddy inside. So why was I so anal about the new update? I’m not. I enjoy the psychology and impact of what one unimportant comment like mine has on a completely unimportant topic.

  • everything new is practilly unimportant

  • How about switching the browser to use the WebKit engine.

  • now thats a big true / September 1, 2009 at 12:18 pm

yep Mr. “who cares” this is it. all smoke and bull****
ive spent my good money on really bad hardware. im going for my 3rd BD unit.. not!!!
no way sony, silly updates and firmware tricks to hide real problems most people are not caring about. why all those 60gb ps3´s all over the world, yes, that ones sony had to ship “under” its cost price, just started to fail all around the world one after another and to be serviced by $150. now if thats my 3rd, $500 + $150 + $150.. no wait! now thats a bargain! a nice way to recover some profit? Fail time after time at the same spare part? ive never played more than 2 hours in a row without a forced break.. oh but wait!! look that cute little monster smiling at me back in there!! woohoo!! sounds like lots of fun!! now im going to buy a “slim” and why not also a ps2, after all their still being sold and its a great way to help sony having a great xmas. oh yea sony 4ever! … oh, im disapointed, but who cares, isnt it?

  • we got the bbci player that surely must count for something right?

  • Two things I hate about this update are: The music takes 2+ seconds to play when you hit the play button, I hate this!! It used to be good. You hit play and music starts, now you have to wait for it to play, stupid. Why do they make updates to ruin what’s good. The other is that you cannot navigate around the system if you’re playing music, now if you press the PS button you will see the stupid message “Do you want to quit playback? Stupid!! If I want to quit playback I just hit the O button! So now if you’re listening to music you’re stuck there and you can’t go out there without stopping the music. It was cool when you play rhe music and even go to the Internet without quiting your music. I hope they fix these two bad, annoying, awkward, stupid “settings.”

  • I have to agree with who cares, why do you need a shortcut to the ps store, its right there, and why tell me what games i just played? i know, i just played them, i like having updates but this one is rather pointless, yeh the bbci shortcut is ok but i had it bookmarked anyway so its not really needed. It would be nice however to be able to write a larger comment above my screen name, you have the space for about 80 charecters but it will only allow about 20, why??? I wish i could go back to the old update but hey ho i guess im just gonna have to live with it.. bit gutted really. And for the record this is my second ps3 as i too was hit by the yellow light of death and POW, 2 years of savegame data, music and pics allll gone.

  • alright, this is a great update, srry for the punks who say otherwise, listen, e keep getting updats and animated background features which are really cool, and its a free update, and we get these because of Japan, those people get bored of stuff easy, they need newupdates so the wont die of bordem, trust me, iknow, the have a Ninga gaiden 7, were on No.2, its CRaZY.

  • this is not that good of an update, what people will be really happy about is if they made it so you could play music DURING THE GAME and why not add ps2 compatibility to some of those systems out there that dont work for it. i personally have a 60gb but honestly you cant even buy a system anymore with backwards compatibility. i dont get it. if they did those 2 things people would be a lot happier

  • Yes why can’t I play games with music saved on my PS3 in the background yet?

  • for those people who are unhappy get a life its a playstation…
be thankfull they even update it…. when the first ps3 came out u couldnt even look at the xmb while u where in a game… they done heaps to it stop cryin and sayin its not good enough

  • man i did the download the other day & i like the old 1 better cause u can’t go on the internet & listen 2 music anymore at the same time that sux & it don’t even look futuristic u sony people should fix it up cause u did stuff it up

  • Not all PS3 owners are hardcore gamers, some use it for the media player, so where’s the improved codec support, wheres the improved image format support, where’s the flash or Quicktime player support?

I personally couldn’t give a f@@k what sony might have in their store or animated themes etc it’s all BS.

    iPlayer good addition.

  • There is a simple soloution for you die hard gamers and media heads
Get your Ps3 modified, put a chip in it, so you can do whatever you want.
Sony has old geeks doing these foolish things.

  • Well I downloaded the update, but now its stuck on the ‘updating database’ section.. yes my internet connection is solid, im writing this message on the same connection as we speak. I really would have hoped for browser stability improvements, and codec updates. and yeah, personalized music during gameplay, and ps2 compatibility, keeping dreaming indeed… =(

  • okay got it installed.. Well, I never cared about sonys updates and ads in the upper right corner anyway, and iuno if that can be removed so… dang. and the video/playstation store menu is useless cus I can’t use it in Canada LOL fail… I liked the older sounding startup sound better (picky much?) and HEY the music seems to be playin fine with the web browser.. PHEW.. browser still sux tho..

  • The update still lets you go on the internet while playing music. Does anyone know where more dynamic themes are?

  • who cares (not the top who cares) / September 2, 2009 at 11:56 am

the browser is fine your just mad you cant watch por, stop complaining about the little things.

  • HEY guess WHAT .. im typing this from my 60 GB while listening to MUSIC , after updating ! that crap about not being able to play music anymore is BS !!! ….. unlike everyone here , i like the sparkly background ALOT , but u say theres more??????????????? custom themes …. is that the sparkly backgrounds , or , like i suspect , theres more to 3.0 than i know??? PSN zapon

  • No, I’m not saying bs, I have the 60 gigs and I can’t navigate out of the music without stopping it. I called Sony and we did some reset, but it didn’t work. I still need to stop the music if I want to perform any other action. I remember it was like this when I first bought my PS 3 like two years ago.
Is any other of you guys having the same problem?? I would line to know you can let me know adoni@textfree.us

  • ok fifst of all you can play music while playing games it wont play on all of them becuse of the game not becuse of the ps3. and yes the new update does suck becuse you cant navigate around your xmb while playing music. all the pretty shit aint worth a dime if you cant do what you want on the system. and if you do not want to update go to ps3hacks.com to find out how. peace from the pyroking777
