It seems like a new fashion is in town. Well, a new season has begun and we definitely need a new style, right? In the smartphone industry the worst style it seems to have started: the era of ultra-expensive smartphones. After the $1,000 Samsung Omnia II, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 is now official, and it will cost a whooping 700 euros or, you guessed: $1,000. That’s cool right? It’s the unsubsidized amount, but the iPhone 3GS is so much cheaper and why wouldn’t you get that one? Judging by its quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and tri-band UMTS/HSPA networks, the Sony Xperia X2 will head to T-Mobile therefore it remains to be seen what pricing will the carrier chose. Verizon is getting the Samsung Omnia II so it will be very interesting to see which carrier offers the best contracts.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 features a 3.2″ WVGA TFT 480 x 800 pixels touchscreen, 8.1-megapixel camera with autofocus, AGPS, WiFi, TV-out, Bluetooth, Google Maps, 4GB microSD card expandable of up to 16GB, phone memory of up to 110MB, and Windows Mobile 6.5 therefore we can expect this smartphone to become available after October 6th.

Well, what do you think? Way too expensive, right? Check out the full spec list here, and you’ll see that this smartphone doesn’t bring anything new. If you want to be successful then you have to come up with something innovative that nobody else has, and then put a $1,000 price tag.

  • I have been following the X2 and I am excited, really thrilled, but I don’t see where they posted a list price. Where did you find it? When i called their support, they said there is no suggested price.

  • The Omnia II has better specs. Also the price dropped to $699. Verizon will probably sell is for $300 under contract.

  • Its out shape seems to be similar with Xperia 1, only some improvement in the RAM(from 256 to 512) and photo part(a rise from a 3.2megapixel camera to an 8.1-megapixel camera),but I suppose the MSM7200 core with 528 Mhz is a little bit hard to operate WM6.5 well. So compared with hardware of Omnia II, the price of X2 may be not so reasonable.
