Apple iPod Event 2009: New iPod Touch 3rd Generation Doesn’t Have A Camera
This was the most expected gadget of Apple’s iPod Event 2009. It resulted in the most disappointed media player that featured at the conference. Why? Because it sucks. Seriously. Steve Jobs & Co. were able to integrate a camera into the tini, tiny, tyni, tyny iPod Nano, but they weren’t able to put it into the huge new iPod Touch? That’s just wrong. The iPod Touch is such a wonderful device, but the lack of a camera with video recording capabilities makes it a crappy handheld and Apple better fix this situation soon.
In the Apple keynote the new iPod Touch 3G is present. It seems like the device features the same processor as the iPhone 3GS as it provides OpenGL 2.0 support. Again: the rumors said that the new iPod Touch will have a built-in camera, but it doesn’t have one.
The new iPod Touch is a great iPod that allows users to listen to user-compiled playlists, while featuring a 3.5-inch screen. This can be considered a pocket computer as it comes packed with built-in WiFi that allows users to surf the Internet, send and receive emails, update FaceBook, AIM instant messaging, but also a portable game player thanks to the so many playable games that are available at the App Store.
You probably guessed that the iPod Touch G3 comes pre-installed with the iPod Touch 3.1 Software ( iPhone OS 3.1.1 ) that features P2P gaming, and copy/paste among others. The new iPod Touch will be available in three versions 8GB / 32GB / 64GB for at prices of $199 / $299 / $399.
That’s all. Yeah: no camera. I was not kidding. I was hoping that Apple did that when forgot to mention the camera. Too bad. I’m just disappointed.

wow i am really disappointed. nothing really new to this device. i had zune hd in mind and now i really have it in mind. im upset with apple but whatever the battery life would have sucked even more with the camera if apple would have put one on. yes once again they also lost another interested buyer.

and a new wifi chip and yes the ipod touch doesn’t have a camera but thats only because apple was having technical difficulties and will probably release a 4thGen in the spring time so take the new 3rdGen or wait until the spring for the 4thGen to come out but get a Zune.

I guess I understand the logic behind it (don’t want to cannibalize potential phone sales) but I’m still disappointed. I was preparing to buy an iPod touch but now I have no reason to do so. I suppose they know what they’re doing but they definitely lost a customer here.

Why do you need a camera on your ipod? If your like most other people in the world who do not live below the poverty line, or below the poverty line in some cases, you probably carry a cell phone with you that has a camera. That’s one camera. You may also carry a digital camera which also, surprisingly, has a camera. So there’s two cameras. So, please tell me why you need a camera on your iPod. There is no point. And most importantly, if there weren’t rumors of a camera, you wouldn’t be upset at all over it. If you want to waste your money on a zune, just because it can connect to an hdtv, oh boy, than go ahead. But, how many times will you really need to connect your zune to your tv.

Have to agree with the others – the lack of a camera is really disappointing. But also what does that say about the value proposition of ATT if the camera is the only thing keeping people interested in an iPhone instead of an ipod touch ……

Why would someone buy Zune HD? Hum! well it can play HD720P video, HD radio, OLED Display that you actually can see when you are out side in the sun and prolong the battery life, and $20 cheaper.
this absolutely sucks. i am SOOOOO pissed off with apple. they have lost my support for sure and im surethe support of millions of others. if they do not correct this problem immediately, they will permenantly lose my support and i will never buy another ipod. this is absolutely outrageous and i hope noone buys this product. i still have my 1st gen.touch but even i can see that their is almost no differencebetween the 2nd gen and they “new” and Shiny third gen. theirs absolutely no reason for anyone who owns the 2nd gen to buy the third gen. i hope apple loses millions, even billions with this foolish mistake.
I’d also like to know how many of you have actually ever seen an oled screen. It is still hard to see in the sun. And how many times do you need to see your screen out in the sunlight.
TLONG15, I have seen OLED screen a year before the Zune HD released, because I have designed Windows CE device and have done a ton of research into them, and they look amazingly sharp and bright. you can see the screen from different angle, without any distortion in color unlike TFT LCD screen, and they used 30% less power.
To tlong ur a fuckin idiot, first of all not everyone has a phone with a camera and if they do the camera probably sucks. Second, I don’t know any guy that walks around with a digital camera, so idk WTF u r talking about. TLong15… I totally understand your point about “why do we need a camera on an ipod? You are right, I have a blackberry with camera video and still. I have a nice digital camera about 8 megapix. BUT, the reason I would want the ipod with camera is to quickly load videos/pics onto the web via the touch. Also, I have never owned an apple product, but have worked with them many times. I also think that the pricing strategy will be a loss for apple which will show in their stock price in the next month. Not that Zune is the answer, but at least the price is right for the same features. No app store, I know… yet, atleast, and maybe never. And I have seen an OLED screen before but not in sunlight so maybe you are right?
Other than the addition of an adequate memory (64GB model) which should have been available in the first place, I don’t see much improvement over the 2nd generation. I think I’ll just plug along with my overfilled 32GB Touch until a more innovative company overtakes the market, and wins my money.
And one more thing… ever have your iPod Touch or iPhone reset to the main app screen while you’re browsing through your music? Ever have iTunes completely jack up your music library when you “upgrade” to one of the countless iTunes version updates? Just about everyone that I know who has a 16GB or bigger Touch or iPhone has this happen on a regular basis.
Cool, they finally put a speaker on the Touch. Why wasn’t it on there to begin with? No camera? Yes, that IS an issue. This move by Apple completely limits development of a lot of apps. Why even have a photo library?
I think that there is no problem with not having a camera. My iPod Touch is for two purposes: playing games and listening to music. Due to the internet not being available in a lot of places and the iTouch not being able to utilize a phone network, a lot of functions are useless and so I do not carry it everywhere; if I want a camera, I have one on my phone. A very good one. I assume all of you who could afford to think about getting an iTouch also have a phone with a very good camera, too. What I am disappointed in is the lack of a mic; that could have very much augmented the iTouch experience by allowing a large amount of apps that would be typically used on an iTouch to be functional and allowing some of the built in features (voice control, memos, etc) without having to buy an uncomfortable mic/earphone. In face, I believe Apple is the only company which makes these earphones, meaning that I will now, if I want to use a voice function, be confined to terribly uncomfortable and crappy earphones. The biggest thing I wanted was a bigger iTouch, and it happened. Yay for me. If you wanted the iTouch to get a camera and would actually be frequently using it (and I don’t want one; it would wreak havoc on my battery life), you would be better off getting an iPhone anyways. Most people don’t carry around their iTouches enough to have it be useful enough to merit the extra $50 it would probably cost.
although the zune hd will not be capable of playing youtube vids or any flash because it doesnt have flash it will still be a great product and at a reasonable price, sharp look, wifi, hd radio, and more the product will be amazing! apple had us all waiting for a pieca crap device with really no new features but more apps. what a waste for us and a waste for them. I am officially a Zune customer and they will have 220 in their pockets when i purchase the HD on september 15=]]
What can I say? no cam, no FM, no GPS, no nothing… a V3.1 SW and a faster processor took a full year of genius Apple engineers to cook up for this crappy 3rd gen iTouch. Wow…this is simply stupid.

Apple is a monopoly. Without an app store, what good is the Zune? I’m all about getting a Zune on the 15th, but I can’t justify it without a decent app store. What do you guys that are planning on getting a zune think about that? I just want to know for my own benefit so I don’t make a dumb decision and get a touch. Again, I don’t own a touch at all, so I’m pretty neutral at this point.
Apple just lost me as a customer. I’ve been waiting for a touch with a camera because I would carry it with me alot more; not just for games and music, but would use the camera and wifi capability for work too. The tablet seems useless since it can’t fit in your pocket and if you’re gonna carry something that needs a bag, might as well carry a laptop that still does more. Hate using the iphone as a phone and att service sucks so switched back to a blackberry. Give us a better option Apple cuz you’re loosing loyal business.
I am waiting for Microsoft to come out with some app store for zune hd, then I’ll get one. Apple just make me to have a good excuse for not buy Itouch, because I will have to get another of thier expense computer just to develop application.
I would imagine there would be alot more App if Microsoft put their act together and build an app store, then you will see alot and alot more PC guy developing app in no time.

I had 400 dollars set aside to buy the new touch, although I won’t be spending it. The lack of the camera was a deal breaker for me.
To be fair the Zune HD doesn’t have a camera either. That would have been a reason to choose the iPod touch over the Zune though. If Apple put in an OLED screen in the touch that would have been a good reason to stick with Apple too. They do have the best app store. OLED screens have perfect black level (the black.. ,or I should say foggy grey, level in the Touch LCD is just dreadful.) this means superb contrast. Imagine watching a video where shadow detail is deep and rich and not all hazed out by the LCD backlight. When an LCD displays “black” or close to it is actually a dark grey. An OLED is true black when it is supposed to as in it emmits NO light. The colors are richer on an OLED, and there is no ghosting in videos. The viewing angle also blows away an LCD, no matter which way you look at it it won’t wash out or shift color.
Someday most all handhelds will go to OLED. It is new tech and I am dissapointed Apple is not on the cutting edge anymore.

This is seriously disappointing… With the lack of a camera, and no 16GB model anymore, there really is no point in getting an ipod (regardless of their app store being the best). I had my money set aside for this, but now I’m waiting on the Tegra 650 or better to come out… Hurry it up Nvidia. The time to blow Apple off their crumbling pedestal is now.
Since my monthly incone is a fairly modest amount of money I can not afford to have 2-3 different gadgets to carry around : a digital cam or a phone with a crappy one, an mp3 player/PMP/PDA … I was REALLY waiting for a 3rd gen iPod touch with a cam to have it all in one but now… what can I say, another lost customer for apple… It totally sucks because I was really excited and ready to spend my precious bucks on the next gen touch… It turns out my hopes have been up for nothing… And about the nano getting everything that should have gone to the touch… I’ve never even heard people mention it as in intending to buy one, I don’t think people are interested in it… So to me, this was an epic failure by apple.
I really enjoyed reading all of the posts on here! I couldn’t agree more with others about the disappointing news about the Ipod Touch not really getting updated this time around! I sent some direct feedback to Apple on the co. website and suggest others to do so as well! It would make Apple really start to think, and maybe in a good way. I think I realize that I put way too much anticipation and hope in this one device from Apple! It sucks to say the least, now I don’t really know 4 sure exactly what I will do! I’m sure I’ll figure it all out eventually, lol. Oh well!!!
I too was waiting for the new Ipod Touch 32 with CAM. But since the news that no CAM will be included, I will pick up a Zune HD.

b. HD screen? lol wrong. its got the same res as the iPod, it can just OUTPUT HD. this is useful for…well nothing.
c. OLED screen They can display more colors, and dont need a backlight. downside? their lifetime is nearly 1/4th of standard LCD screens.

1. No, they don’t own the rights to the camera, they simply didn’t want the camera in the ipod.

3. The Zune HD has its good points, just as the Ipod does.
a. You’re wrong about the FCC and the quality being low. Do some actual research or list your sources.
b. You’re right, it doesn’t have an HD screen, it has an HD Out, which you can hook up to any HD tv provided you carry the dock around with you, to watch HD movies.
c. Not only can the OLED screen display more colors, with better color accuracy than lcd, but it also produces much better contrast than lcd, is brighter and easier to see, has better viewing angles than lcd, and displays fast moving images better than lcd.
As far as the life of it goes, are you seriously planning on keeping your ipod for the next 10 years? The Zune HD OLED, is rated at 14,000 hours which is about 5 years @ 8 hours per day. After 5 years, I think it will be time for an upgrade don’t you? Try thinking before you waste your time writing gibberish.
