iPhone OS 3.1 Problems Brick Phones, Break Exchange Support
Apple is trying to fix things with the iPhone 3GS and with the iPhone OS 3.1. I know this is probably the best smartphone on the market, but in fact, the iPhone 2G and iPhone 3G really sucked in terms of security. Both of them. Although Apple said that the original iPhone and iPhone 3G supported Exchange support, that is not true. Thanks to iPhone OS 3.1 the smartphones are now really supporting full Exchange therefore they cannot use it.
How’s that? Well, the original iPhone and the 3G do not support hardware encryption, and only devices which comply to the Exchange encryption rules from 2007 can access the service. Now that Apple improved Exchange support on all iPhones, the smartphones do not lie anymore by saying that they are devices with good encryption because they cannot do that anymore. If you don’t have an iPhone 3GS then you shouldn’t upgrade to iPhone 3.1, or you can ask your company to disable Exchange encryption.
Also many iPhone users report other problems with the iPhone OS 3.1: shorter battery life, bricked units, software crash, and many other issues. Oh, what have you done Apple?

My iPhone 3gs failed when updating to 3.1, error 1602. Then later when I tried to restore it from recover mode it gave error 1604. I tried 3 times and I even completely removed iTunes, etc from my pc then reinstalled it an it still didn’t work!
In the end I used my other computer, installed iTunes 9, Downloaded the 3.1 software again and it finally worked!!!! I simply connect back to my normal pc and sync my iPhone with my previous backup. Took a few hours but I got there in the end, it’s been a few days now and I have had no problems at all, thankfully.
I hope this helps anyone having problems.

errors usually occur with windows xp maybe due to driver problems. try using vista when updating or restoring os
Since I own a PS3 and updates are hit or miss I decided to first download the update and then install after it was completed. I first restarted the iphone and computer and then installed the update. It all went down without a hitch so like the PS3 updates get corrupted when they are downloaded straight to the device and installed rather than downloading to itunes first. That’s my 2 cents or I could have just been lucky.
Jailbreaking iPhone 3G with OS3.1:
1. Download PwnageTool 3.1
2. Download the unhacked OS3.1 firmware from Apple. http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-6600.20090909.AwndZ/iPhone1,2_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw
3. Run PwnageTool and select the unhacked firmware from step #2. Modifying the firmware should take about 4-6 minutes.
4. A modified version of the firmware should appear on your desktop.
5. Insert an AT&T simcard into the iPhone.
6. Put your iPhone in DFU / hard reboot mode. (Power + Home button ritual)
7. Plug in your iPhone to your computer via USB.
8. Start up iTunes.
9. iTunes should detect the iPhone as in recovery mode and should give you a button to restore.
10. On a Mac, hold down the Option key and while clicking on the “Restore” button in iTunes to choose the location and file to use.
11. Select the modified firmware on the desktop (created from step #3)
12. Restore.
13. Allow anywhere between 10 – 15 minutes for the restoring process to complete.
14. The iPhone should reboot itself. Allow 3-5 more minutes for the phone to configure the new settings.
15. Cydia should appear. Install repo666.ultrasn0w.com into Cyndia’s sources.
16. Install and run “Fuzzyband” from Cydia to downgrade your iPhone’s BaseBand / radio firmware to version 04.26.08.
17. Remove the AT&T and insert in your non-AT&T sim card.
18. Reboot your iPhone.
19. The phone should be able to use non-AT&T network now (T-Mobile, Verizon, etc).
20. Enter in any appropriate network settings (E.g. for T-Mobile: Settings –> Carrier –> General –> Network –> Cellular Data Network –> Cellular Data section APN: internet2.voicestream.com)
21. Your phone should now work with your carrier.
22. This firmware hack will not brand your carrier on the top corner of your phone. You can install “MakeitMine” from Cydia to customize the top of section of your phone. This step is not required. It’s only for cosmetics.
