Two weeks ago Sony released the PS3 3.00 firmware update for all PS3 users, and although it was expected to be a great update, most users didn’t like it or they just experienced too many issues with the software. So what did Sony do? It has release the PS3 3.01 firmware update for the masses, an update which hopefully solves most of the issues that the software was causing to the hardware.
The Sony Blog states that the PS3 3.01 Firmware Update is just an optional update that doesn’t do much, it just improves the system stability while using some of the PS3 format software. Many PS3 users reported problems with the Uncharted, and DualShock controllers after update to PS3 3.00, and now they’re hoping that Sony has managed to overcome all the issues surrounding their gaming console.
The update is live as of yesterday according to Eric Lempel and many users the update will fix Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, while other users state that their PS3 still doesn’t load some discs. Too bad, but Sony will address more issues in the following weeks so stay tuned for more information.
its disgusting that sony have not payed the time to sort out this major update, as now like most people i cannot play any games at all on my ps3, it wont even recognise the game when i put it in, or the blu ray discs i have.
i sincerely hope they sort this problem out this week. as i feel like i have been robbed by sony and also feel sony are pushing for people to buy a new slim ps3, and like most i simply cannot afford a new ps3 slim.
i havent had any problems with the new patch at all on the ps3 so its not all sony falut

I have never had a single problem with any of the updates, my PS3 or networking issues with my PC. What is the freaking problem you all have with your systems? I tend to think that these things are self inflicted, much like almost all of the PC issues people seem to have. Surfing crappy websites, using crappy software (like Yahoo) and trying to do stupid things with your systems. They are made for playing game and will do much more but WTF? OVER!

For Christmas 2 years ago we paid almost $600 for our son’s PS3 80gb system and after the 3.01 upgrade the blue-ray disk drive stopped working. Funny thing is we decided on going with Sony PS3, because it had a blue-ray drive and now it won’t play any games (PS2, PS3) or DVDs. Sony Canada said it would cost $190.97 to fix it, but with no guaranty it won’t happen again. Anyone looking to purchase a gaming console should consider XBox or Wii. At least Microsoft admit when they are at fault and agree to fix the problem free.
I still can’t believe sony won’t admit it. Even though SOME consoles aren’t affected, others are with NO fault to their owners. I have only used my PS3 for gaming. When I downloaded 3.01, it stopped working completly. I had no virus or whatever you guys think.

Well it’s probably optional until you buy a new game that requires you to update in order to play like Tekken 6. I came home with the copy of the game excited to play it and when the update thing appeared, I canceled it and it didn’t let me play. So when I did, my ps3 stopped reading discs even ps2 and ps1 discs.
I’ve been looking for ways to solve it and I can only come up with formatting the hard drive. But I still won’t be able to play Tekken 6 without updating. At least I will be able to play my other games fine. But I am unsure if this formatting idea will work.
If no one wants to blame anyone, then I hope Sony, at least, do something about it or give us an update about the firmware issue. Because right now, I have not yet to hear a word from Sony about this issue.
If downloading the update is our own risk, then isn’t having a required update to play the next game you buy a setup? The ps3 owners are not the ones who made the update, and we don’t want to pay another 150-300 dollars to get it fixed. we just want the problem fixed. Its not like we were aware that the update would do this instantly 0_o I know I wasn’t.
I really hope there will be an update soon that will solve this big issue.
I have a ps3 that my parents brought for me for 600 bucks! Now I cannot even play any games or watch any movies at all. And I don’t feel like the update was optional, I mean you usually download the update when you get a new game! (it’s kind of mandatory to do!)
I do not want another ps3! Some dudes on the phone said they will send a refurb ps3 if I pay 150 dollars to get it fix. So… they will fix some used ps3 and give that to me and I give them my ps3 which is one of the old but good models? That is too unfair.
I hope sony comes out with new info soon! I want my ps3 fixed. And I do not want to pay extra money to get it fix when it was not my fault.
nope! this update didnt do anything. it is sonys fault because ive tried games that do not work on my ps3 on the NEW SLIM LINE and they throw the same error code. this is definitely a software issue sony needs to deal with. and these games that dont work were new no scratches or defects. some games work and some dont so this problem cant be the system users fault.
I just bought Tekken 6 on the day it was released. Before playing Tekken 6 I remember playing my other games like NBA 2K10, Resistance 2, and Fallout 3 just fine the day before and last week. Now playing my new game, Tekken 6, I was required to update to firmware 3.00 or 3.01 (I forgot which firmware it was.). After installing all the required software, finally I started playing Tekken 6. After an hour or so the game started to freeze on loading screens. Sometimes I would get disk read errors even from my other games. This is ridiculous and I hope Sony will approach this TODAY. Damn firmware…

I finally updated mine, and mine seems to work just fine.
I think it all depends on what KIND if PS3 you have. I have the first edition PS3(I got the PS3 the first day it came out). People with newer PS3s, however, seem to be having this problem.
There is NO doubt that it is Sony’s fault. I mean, over 5000 people having the same error AT THE SAME TIME? That is NOT a coincidence, and I’m pretty sure over 5000 people didn’t self-inflict it. What’s worse is that they are CHARGING to fix it. I smell big buisness.
As per the update being optional: It is unless you want to get online. You MUST upgrade to 3.01 to get on the internet with a PS3. So pretty much, it boils down to this:
If you have a newer PS3, you have a choice:
1. Update in order to get online, then have no games/DVDs work.
2. Wait for Sony to admit that they made an error and for them to fix it FREE OF CHARGE.

I agree it’s sony fault. I have a ps3 slim and it works fine with 3.01
but My brother in law has a phat ps3, we install the 3.01 update. the
ps3 will not read any ps3 games at all. for some reason, it reads
ps2 games. Same happen to my brother as well, which he also has a phat ps3. Not sure, but I think the 3.01 firmware is commanding the ps3 blu ray drive to not work on the older version. maybe the 3.01 firmware has something that older version of the ps3 can’t handle.
hope sont will try to help. if not, I really think they are pushing people to buy a PS3 Slim.

I just had the same issue !
bought uncharted 2. Had to update and the game worked fine. Then i put a blue ray movie in and 17 minutes into it, The system froze. Now nothing plays. Movies , games, Nothing ! Whats up Sony ?
i have the old playstation 3. 3.0 worked completey fine but after reading this i am not sure if i should install 3.1, but it sounds like only some of the newer games seem affected. maybe this is because the power deand from the games are too great if you have packed your ps3 full of movies and music. taking up a fair amount of gig from your ps3. i am probably wrong i just thought i noticed a pattern. also. last time they brought out a “slim” console was the ps2 one. ad about a year to a year and a half after that the ps3 came out. maybe sony are pushing people to buy the slim so they can get the maximum profit out of the ps3 before the playstation 4 comes out…

I was playing COD MW2 for a while today, then turned the ps3 off and turned it on again to play, but now no game disks read. After searching forums, I came across the following solution:
1. Power on PS3
2. Insert Disk (PS3 Game)
3. Launch a demo or game loaded on the hard drive
4. Once game has loaded, press the PS button and quit game
5. Icon will now show up
Hope this holds, but this allows me to play ps3 games off a disk now; although, I have to do this every time I turn the PS3 on…
