Owners of laptops and mobile devices equipped with built-in accelerometers that can tell which way is down will now benefit of the new Firefox 3.6 that can recognize your screen orientation and adapt accordingly. This new feature was announced by Mozilla evangelist Christopher Blizzard. I think he finally realized that the software had no clue of where it was tilting. This will be a pretty useful feature for labyrinth-type games with virtual marbles rolling around boards, and any number of other gaming situations. Mozilla is now working on the technology for mobile devices where orientation-aware games are a big deal for them.

Some say this new performance of Firefox 3.6 is a useful tool, and think that the Firefox team should concentrate more on making their browsers lighter and faster. Maybe they’re right. But let’s not forget how it benefits those who like to play tilt-sensitive games. Anyways…you can find out on your own by trying it yourself. Here are some test pages for you to try.

I have been playing around with the accelerometer in firefox 3.6b, check out my youtube video: http://bit.ly/wLGb9 or try out the webpage itself http://playground.marmaladeontoast.co.uk/ff3.6
What a completely pointless feature. Why don’t they spend their time on something useful?
